AUSTRIA EUROPE

Top Things to do in Hallstatt

Breathtakingly picturesque, Hallstatt is probably Austria’s most (insta)famous small town! It has a quaint old town and amazing views of Lake Hallstatt and the surrounding alps. As I mentioned in my post on Salzburg and the Lake District, Lake Hallstatt is part of the Salzkammergut region and has actually been declared a UNESCO Heritage site. The town is also well-known for its extensive salt mining history. Without further ado, here are my top things to do in Hallstatt!

Hallstatt

Take in the view! — There are many view points of the lake and village from where you can get some absolutely amazing photos!

Hallstatt Marktplatz

Wander around the Old Town! — With its super quaint Old Town, Hallstatt takes you back to simpler times. Make sure you check out the Marktplatz, which is the center of the town and has many little restaurants and shops nearby.

Protestant Church in Hallstatt

Visit the iconic protestant church — The church you see on all the instagram pictures is the protestant church, so make sure you check out the inside and learn a bit about its history!

Catholic Church in Hallstatt

Catholic Cemetery

Check out the Catholic church and its cemetery — The protestant church isn’t the only one in town! There’s also a catholic church not too far away, which has a very interesting cemetery.

There are a few things that I didn’t get to do because I visited Hallstatt in the winter. However, if you do visit Hallstatt in the summer, I definitely think you should do the following activities!

Visit the Dachstein Ice Caves — Not too far from Hallstatt, there are these amazing ice caves that you can visit from the end of April to the end of September.

Visit the Salt Mines and take the panorama funicular up for an amazing view — You can visit the salt mines and learn all about their history PLUS get an amazing view on your way there! The salt mines are open from the first week of April to the end of November (just make sure you check out the opening hours, as they change in the fall).

Boat on Lake Hallstatt

Rent a boat and have fun on the lake! — You can rent a little boat and explore Lake Hallstatt on your own, or even take a ferry which will give you a tour around the lake.

I really enjoyed wandering around Hallstatt this winter, though I wish I could have visited the Ice Caves and the Salt Mines! Hopefully I’ll get to go back one day. If anyone has visited them, let me know in the comments below, I’d love to hear what they were like!
